Holistic dentistry that supports the health of your smile, entire body in Napier

Many dentists may say that their approach to care supports the health of your entire body, not just the health and beauty of your smile. However, not all conventional dental techniques, technologies, and materials support our overall health and well-being. At Dentiq in Napier, we acknowledge the vital link between the appearance and function of your mouth and the function and health of the rest of your body (your “system”).

As an authentic holistic dentistry practitioner, Dr. Sundar uses materials, equipment, and safe, non-toxic approaches that support long-term health and wellness. Collectively, these principles and investments promote a convenient, comfortable, and pleasant experience at the dentist’s office. It’s the type of experience that keeps patients coming back to our office for the routine visits that are crucial to oral health.

The many mouth-body connections

The oral cavity isn’t an island unto itself. It is connected to other bodily systems and organs in a variety of ways. For instance, we design custom oral appliances to address sleep-disordered breathing, such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea. OSA and other such sleep disorders may be at the root of a host of other serious medical conditions, ranging from hypertension to chronic fatigue and depression.

Likewise, during recall appointments, we may be on the front-lines of detecting the oral symptoms associated with a variety of diseases. For example, xerostomia or dry mouth is related to hundreds of different medical conditions and medications, including diabetes. We stay abreast of any life and lifestyle changes, health problems, supplements, and other factors that can influence your good oral health. When oral health is degraded, it can present new challenges to managing existing conditions (such as blood sugar control). Likewise, many systemic diseases can affect your immunity and wound healing, and put you at heightened risk of developing oral conditions like periodontal disease (gum disease).

Dentiq offers dentistry in sync with your whole body

Dr Lisa Butler on Holistic Dentistry
Your body requires constant, attentive care, and finding a dentist who recognizes this and appreciates your overall health is hard. At Dentiq, holistic dentistry takes on a whole new level of care, and restoration of your overall health is factored into treatment. Be it the type of materials used or treatment procedures; our primary concern will always be your whole-body health.

Hi, I’m Dr. Lisa Butler, and I’d like to talk to you about holistic dentistry or biologic dentistry. I am a biologic dentist. So, what does that mean? It means that when I’m working with you, I’m concerned with the whole-body effects of all dental materials, techniques, and procedures. My goal is to treat the causes of the symptoms to help you restore your total body health. So, how do we do that? We’re very specific in using materials that we find to be the healthiest options for you, such as fluoride-free, BPA-free, mercury-free, metal-free. In addition, we work with your integrated physician, or your naturopath for the timing of dental care, making sure that it is appropriate for you. So why should you choose a holistic dentist? If you’re concerned with being as healthy as possible and using minimally invasive options, then come and see me!

Dentistry that supports your “whole self”

We have made it as easy and stress-free as possible to get the ongoing care you need to stay healthy. Our onsite technologies allow many restorations, including crowns and onlays, to be made in a single visit while you wait. Likewise, we use advanced diagnostic tools to non-invasively, precisely, and safely detect conditions proactively and accurately plan treatments that effectively resolve the problem at hand. Additionally, Dr. Sundar has training in state-of-the-art procedures, such as the placement of dental implants. Implant-supported teeth represent just one of the dental treatments that support lifelong health. In this particular case, dental implants placed in the jaw keep the jawbone strong and prevent damaging bone loss.

How Dentiq is Different

HYGIENE/PERIODONTAL CARE

We use non-fluoride, dye-free, gluten-free polishing paste.

We have and are constantly searching for natural solutions to dental care, i.e. Xylitol, Vitamin D, PH testing etc.

Ozone therapy! We provide ozonated water irrigation in ultrasonic during hygiene appointments and ozonated oil afterwards.

Customized ozone trays and therapy to reduce sensitivity, periodontal disease, and risk of cavities.

We focus on body health and all contributing factors influencing a patient’s oral condition.

RADIOGRAPHS

We try our best to minimize our patients’ exposure using the very latest digital radiographic equipment. We take a DIGITAL PANO every 3-5 years. A digital panoramic x-ray uses TEN TIMES LESS RADIATION THAN A FULL-MOUTH SERIES OF X-RAYS. Bitewings are taken about once per year (or less if a low decay rate is present). We offer an Intra-oral camera that takes pictures rather than radiograph when applicable. We use a CBCT machine that offers low dose exposure options.

ELECTRIC HAND PIECES

Electric hand pieces are less invasive to your teeth and allow Dr. Sundar & Associates to be more precise in her work. Ever have a tooth die after having it worked on, or have increased sensitivity? High speed drills raise the tooth’s pulp temperature by 22 degrees F causing irreversible damage. This could still happen with any drill depending on the amount of decay; however, the electric hand piece is much less traumatic due to constant torque.

FILLINGS

We use materials that have tested more bio-compatible for most patients; we routinely use BPA-free products.

We use ozone to treat decay conservatively, we have saved teeth by treating deep decay with ozone and sedative fillings, which in some cases, have prevented the need for a root canal or extraction.

We use oxygen, a rubber dam, and the “snuffleupagus” air filter when removing amalgam fillings.

CROWNS

We use onlays instead of crowns when possible, to retain live healthy tooth structure. We use the material Zirconia, Cerec, and E-Max for our crowns. These are non-metal materials that have proven bio-compatible for most patients (also used for bridges and onlays). These materials are aesthetically nice and incredibly strong.

EXTRACTIONS

We do all our extractions by using the healthiest technique available.

After a tooth has been removed, we cleans out the periodontal ligament, any infection, and 1-2mm of bone to ensure a clean site. ***Many doctors will simply prescribe an antibiotic, which is ineffective at removing bone infection that is trapped in the tissue, causing a cavitation (a hole in the bone that is filled with necrotic tissue).

After extraction, the area is treated ozonated water or ozone gas.

ZIRCONIA IMPLANTS

Zirconia is the ceramic/crystal phase of Zirconium. Some of their advantages include limited, if any, allergic reaction, no galvanic currents affecting tissue, no ion release, and closer to natural tooth color. Studies have shown that zirconia implants are just as strong as titanium and have the same success rate.

NON-METAL RESTORATIONS

Metal in your mouth can alter your body’s natural electro-chemical characteristics suppressing your immune system. This is what’s called oral galvanism. Not only does this occur in Silver/Mercury fillings, but in Porcelain fused to metal crowns or PFM’s, metal partial dentures, and metal bridges. Therefore, Dr. Sundar & Associates believes it is important to use non-metal biocompatible materials
