At some point in your life, you may face the prospect of having a tooth removed. Understanding the process will make it easier to endure this treatment. At Dentiq Dental in Napier, New Zealand, we welcome your questions about the extraction procedure to help you feel more comfortable and confident in our care. Dr Sundar Jagadeesan and our team have compiled these FAQs to explain the extraction process and why it may be the best course of action for you.
Like most people, you may prefer to avoid tooth extraction at all costs. Ordinarily, we would agree with you. However, there are times when extraction is necessary to restore or preserve your oral health. Dr. Sundar and our team recommend extraction to correct the following dental issues:
Dr. Sundar will start by numbing your mouth to avoid discomfort and pain. Using forceps, we’ll then loosen your tooth and pull it out. We’ll clean the extraction sight and cover it with gauze to curtail bleeding. We’ll then give you detailed instructions on caring for the extraction site to help expedite your recovery.
Dr. Sundar and our team will make this treatment as relaxing and comfortable as possible through anesthesia. We also offer sedation options for anyone who needs a little extra help dealing with dental anxiety or fear.
Initial recovery is fairly quick for a routine tooth extraction, generally a few days. Complete recovery, however, can take several weeks.
During recovery, a blood clot will form at the extraction site to aid with your healing. Do not dislodge this blood clot, as it could lead to complications. You may experience slight bleeding, swelling or discomfort after the anesthesia wears off. The bleeding should taper off on its own within a few hours. You can take OTC medication to relieve discomfort and swelling. If you experience nausea, shortness of breath, vomiting, excessive pain or other abnormal symptoms, contact Dr Sundar immediately, as these could be signs of infection requiring immediate treatment.
