Bone Grafting for Ridge Preservation

Restore healthy function and a confident smile with bone graft, ridge preservation

Every time you use your teeth to bite or grind down food, you keep the jawbone strong. The force exerted by these functions is transferred through the teeth roots to the jaw. This process tells the osteoblast cells to build more bony tissue. However, when you lose teeth as the result of the decay or other trauma, there are no roots to transfer the force that is generated by behaviors such as grinding food to the jaw. This results in bone loss (or resorption). Fortunately, our dental office, Dentiq in and around Hawks Bay, Napier, can build up insufficient bone with a graft.

Sink your teeth into the process

A “graft” or “grafting” refers to materials that are taken from the patient’s own body or an external source (such as a synthetically derived material) and are then transferred to a part of the body that could use the augmentation (or rebuilding). As it relates to resorption of bone in the oral cavity and jaw, Dr. Sundar and Associates can reconstruct or regenerate bony tissue. The loss of such tissue can also arise as the result of advanced gum (periodontal) disease that erodes at the gums and supportive bone.

Commonly, we can use the bone graft process to restore or preserve the bony ridge in the jaw that surrounds the roots of the teeth. In fact, this procedure allows patients who otherwise would not be candidates for dental implants, to benefit from this superior form of tooth replacement. Consider that enough bone must be present in the jaw to support the crown, bridge, or denture in an implant-retained system. If a patient has experienced bone resorption, he or she may not have sufficient bone to support the implant that becomes a part of the jaw (a process known as “osseointegration”). If the jaw cannot support the implant, how can the implant support the replacement tooth (or teeth)? The answer is it cannot. The good news is ridge preservation via bone graft techniques is a straightforward way to build up bone. So, many different patients can benefit from the best options that modern dentistry has to offer for tooth replacement.

A fantastic value

We offer many options for payment and financing at Dentiq. However, by its very nature, bone grafting and ridge preservation is a great value. These treatments promote healthy function and a youthful, attractive appearance. They address or prevent the myriad devastating consequences of bone resorption, ranging from premature aging due to changes in your facial structure, to problems with eating comfortably and pronouncing words clearly. Bone loss can affect every aspect of your life. Due to our biologic and advanced approach to care, Dentiq’s patients also benefit from powerful regenerative adjuncts – such as Platelet Rich Fibrin. PRF is derived from your own blood, and is used to facilitate fast, natural healing following treatments such as extractions and bone grafting.
