Dental Implants

Your “one-stop” for dental implants, from placement to restoration, in Napier

In its first comprehensive study in 20 years (in 2009), the Ministry of Health reported that one in three adults had tooth decay. Today, extensively decayed teeth can be preserved with advanced techniques. However, sometimes, even a natural tooth treated with root canal therapy can’t be “saved.” It may be beneficial for your oral health (and overall health) to extract the tooth, and replace it sooner rather than later. Fortunately, patients with gaps in their smile or with extractions on the horizon now have more options for tooth replacement than ever before, including dental implants at Dentiq in Napier. In fact, Dr Sundar has advanced post-graduate training in oral implantology.

What does this mean?

For starters, not all general dental practices in and around Hawke’s Bay do surgically place implants. These cylinders are made from biocompatible (“tissue-friendly”) dental materials. They are precisely placed in your jawbone. The material is designed to join or integrate into the surrounding bone in the jaw. In this way, the implant becomes a part of your jaw. So, dental implants are quite literally replacements for the tooth roots lost due to decay, disease, or other trauma.

Like a natural tooth root, dental implants stabilise and support the replacement teeth. At Dentiq, you have the ultimate continuity of care (from the team that you know well, and that knows your case well!), convenience, and value. We take pride that our advanced, quality materials and exceptional care is within reach for individuals and families, and isn’t cost-prohibitive.

By their very nature, dental implants are an exceptional value. Since implants are designed like natural teeth, from the root to the crown, there are many advantages associated with this form of tooth replacement. Implant-supported teeth are:

  • Aesthetic – look like natural teeth
  • Highly functional – designed for optimal chewing efficiency
  • Conservative – preserve maximum natural tooth structure
  • Easy to care for – brush and floss like natural teeth, no need for special cleaning aids
  • Durable – can last a lifetime with good oral care

Notably, dental implants prevent destructive bone loss. They keep the bone in your jaw strong. So, you retain youthful facial contours and the ability to speak clearly and chew food efficiently and comfortably. We trust this has given you a view of the benefits of dental implants. What are dental implants?

Hi, I’m Dr. Sundar Jagadeesan from Dentiq. I would like to speak about dental implants. Dental implants are special posts surgically placed into the jawbone to replace missing teeth or support a denture.

The implant functions as the root of a tooth. Depending on the number of implants placed, it can be used to replace everything from a single tooth to an entire arch of teeth.

It takes an average of three to six months for the jawbone to integrate with the implant before it can be used to support a dental restoration.

What materials are used in a dental implant?

The most common material used for a dental implant is titanium or titanium alloy. Ceramic implants are also used in patients wishing to have a nonmetallic option.

As a practice, we offer both titanium implants and ceramic implants at Dentiq.

What are the alternatives to replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant?

Even though dental implants are the best way to replace missing teeth, some people are not good candidates to have an implant.

We suggest either two bridges, dentures, or partial dentures that can replace missing teeth without requiring implants in those situations.

The missing tooth or teeth can also be left without a replacement. However, this can lead to other problems such as an unstable bite or unwanted movement of the surrounding teeth.

Visit us at Dentiq and get your smile completed with dental implants.

What are the risks associated with a dental implant?

There’s always a small chance that the dental implant will fail to integrate with the jaw bone and have to be removed.

Certain medical conditions can put you at a higher risk for implant failure. As with any surgery, there is also a risk of surgical complications when placing a dental implant.

Improperly positioned dental implants can make placing a useful dental restoration difficult, if not impossible.

At Dentiq, we mitigate this problem by trying to do all our planning digitally before the surgery. We will get the position of the implant close to perfection to maintain a good bite and get a good restorative outcome.

What are the benefits of getting dental implants?

There are many benefits to having an implant placed. A missing tooth can be replaced without cutting down the adjacent healthy teeth as required when placing a bridge.

Implants allow the dentist to replace missing teeth even when a bridge is not an option.

Dental implants can provide a more stable base for a denture, particularly in the lower jaw.

Also, dental implants help preserve and maintain healthy jaw bone in the area of the missing tooth or teeth.

With proper home care and maintenance, dental implants can restore your smile and chewing ability for a lifetime.

Dental implants are titanium roots, that are replaced with in the jawbone to resemble a tooth or group of teeth. A screw is inserted through the gums and into the jawbone. A porcelain crown is then attached to the screw to become the new tooth or teeth. They can be used to support dental prosthesis including crowns, dentures, and bridges. Today’s treatments are so natural looking, no one will know you had surgery. There’s approximately a 95% success rate for all implants. With modern advances in dentistry, some implants can be restored immediately with life like all porcelain crowns. For more details ask your dentist.
